A daredevil grandmother has defied gravity, celebrating her 90th birthday by casually jumping out of a plane with her two grandkids.

Josie Cairns told Today she still can’t believe she did it, but said she was so happy she got to mark the occasion with her family.

“I thought if I turned 90, if I ever go that far, I would love to go skydiving and I had my wish granted,” the Melbourne gran said.

“And it was great, I was looking up in the air, it was crystal clear and then I looked around and I saw my family all around me, I can’t thank them enough for being there.”

While voluntarily throwing yourself out of an aircraft at 12,000 feet might sound unhinged, Josie’s granddaughter Shalane told Today it was right up her Oma’s alley.

“This is her all over, she doesn’t stop,” Shalane said.

“To be honest, she’s actually exhausting because she doesn’t stop, but she’s an inspiration and if we could even have half of her energy at her age, life will be great.”

And with a cheeky little tandem skydive already under her belt, Josie is already thinking about what extreme way she can celebrate future birthdays.

“They asked if I’d like to do bungee jumping and I said that’s one thing I don’t want to do,” Josie said.

“I’ve got so many goals that I want to do, I have done it and this is one of the great ones - but I’ve got other stuff that I would like to do.

“Maybe when I’m at 110, I might do a solo skydive.”
