Every minute of every day, we get older.

There's nothing you can do about the fact, but worrying too much about it could actually be shortening your life.

A recent study had suggested changing the way you think about aging could actually add another 7.5 years to your life if you embrace the process.

Psychotherapist and Silver Sirens founder, Faith Agugu told Today Extra it was not just about "putting a positive spin" on aging, but actually living a more fulfilled life by embracing the fact you're another year older.

"I think the first step around changing this attitude is being aware and accepting it," she said.

"Fighting aging is like swimming against the stream - you're pushing against what is natural. So by leaning into it and accepting it is natural, it is a privilege, it will make things a lot easier."

Research shows that actively thinking positively has other health outcomes such as reducing the risk of dementia and lowering blood pressure.

"When we are happy we tend to live longer - we make better choices for our bodies but also the relationships we have," Faith said.

But while it may seem easy for everyone to say they'll get on board with aging positivity - there's one thing Faith said you should never say to someone about the natural part of life.

"A lot of people will say 'Oh wow you look great for your age', but that itself is problematic," she said.

She said saying this puts negative connotations on getting older like it is a bad thing - but "It's OK, you still look great though".

"Just don't say it at all - it's such a backhanded compliment,' she said.

Instead, Faith said accepting aging isn't about giving up and throwing in the towel, but choosing to make an effort with the choices you make.

"Because this is a phase of life that is natural and you should be really grateful for it because not everyone has the luxury of aging," she said.
