Today in History - December 15 | He's known as the man who failed to assassinate John F. Kennedy
Retired postal worker Richard Paul Pavlick was arrested on December 15 in 1960 for plotting to kill president John F Kennedy.
The 73-year-old loaded his car with 10 sticks of dynamite and headed to Palm Beach to kill the president.
With his trunk filled with explosives, Pavlick planned to ram the president's motorcade.
But Pavlick, who was known to write angry letters, let his plot slip and the Secret Service caught wind.
He was arrested in Florida for driving on the wrong side when detectives uncovered the dynamite.
Pavlick had a history of mental illness and was deemed mentally unfit to face charges.
He spent the next six years bouncing between psychiatric hospitals and the charges were eventually dropped.
John F Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, three years after Pavlick's foiled attempt.
