Tobacco lobby funds Nationals, LDP

A tobacco company and anti-plain packaging campaigners contributed to the election campaign coffers of the Nationals and Liberal Democrats.

The Australian Electoral Commission revealed on Wednesday the LDP received $20,000 from tobacco firm Philip Morris, while the Nationals received $14,800.

The Alliance of Australian Retailers, a group set up to lead the campaign against plain packaging of cigarettes, gave the LDP $90,000.

The Liberal, Labor and Greens parties don't accept tobacco-related donations.

Senior members of the Nationals, including cabinet minister Fiona Nash and ministerial colleague David Gillespie, have previously voiced concerns about the party accepting such donations.
