Cusick was facing up to 15 years in jail for the terror he inflicted on an innocent man in March.

The professional athlete was high on drugs and alcohol when he attacked a driver on North Terrace in the city and stole his car.

The court heard Cusick drove at up to 90km/h on the wrong side of the road before crashing the stolen car into the front yard of a Richmond home.

The 28-year-old previously apologised to the innocent motorist who he punched and kicked in the attack, blaming a "bad LSD trip" for his actions.

His victim, a medical researcher, continues to suffer from the ordeal.

The judge decided not to jail Cusick, instead suspending his three-year, one-month prison term.

His relieved family, who had flown to Australia for the sentencing, sobbing as the verdict was read out.

Cusick will be allowed to return to the US after paying $6500 in compensation to the victim for damage to the car.
