Man dies in horrific car crash in Newcastle

A 27-year-old man has died after he was ejected from the passenger seat of a car in Newcastle overnight.

Police believe the Hyundai i30 was travelling east on Maitland Road at Tighes Hill, when it collided with a power pole about 11.10pm.

The impact of the crash caused the car to split in half and the male passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

The Hyundai then hit into a parked car and a sedan before coming to a stop.

The 27-year-old passenger died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

The driver, a 31-year-old man, was able to free himself and was taken to hospital, where he remains.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
