Worker dead, two critical after gas leak at paper mill

A man is dead and two other workers are fighting for life after inhaling a mystery toxic gas at a paper mill in Albury, on the Victoria-New South Wales border.

Emergency services were called to the Norske Skog site in Ettamogah about 3pm today.

About 150 employees were evacuated, with 15 taken to Albury Hospital.

A man has since died, while the other two remain critical.

9NEWS understands the remaining 12 people are expected to be discharged tonight.

Fire crews remain at the scene, while WorkSafe has also launched an investigation.

Norske Skog told 9NEWS they have "never had an incident like this".

The cause of the leak and kind of toxic gas remains unknown.
