Two teenagers have been charged after a man was allegedly stabbed outside a McDonald's in the Melbourne CBD last night.

Police were told a fight broke out between a group of people outside the restaurant on Elizabeth Street about 9.20pm.

A 40-year-old man from Eltham was allegedly stabbed several times and taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition with life-threatening injuries.

The McDonald's outlet was taped off by police while investigations were underway.

Officers rushed to the scene and arrested two 15-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy near William Street.

A 15-year-old Melton South boy has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury and other assault-related offences, including affray, committing an indictable offence while on bail, weapon offences and possessing cannabis.

He will face a children's court today.

A 17-year-old Tullamarine teen has been bailed to appear before a children's court at a later date, charged with affray and weapon offences.

A 15-year-old Heidelberg Heights teen has been released pending further enquiries.
