Fourth case of meningococcal disease diagnosed in Adelaide

A 19-year-old man has become the latest person to be diagnosed with invasive meningococcal in South Australia – the fourth case in the state this week alone.
The man has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition.
SA Health has said all cases are “unrelated”, and stresses meningococcal is only spread by close and lengthy contact “so there is no increased public health risk”.
Yesterday, an 18-year-old man, 29-year-old man and 71-year-old woman were in hospital in a stable condition, after they each contracted the disease.
SA Health has identified multiple people who had contact with the 19-year-old, of which 13 people have been instructed to receive antibiotic chemoprophylaxis.
Twenty-five cases of invasive meningococcal disease have been reported in South Australia this year, compared to 27 at this time last year.
A total of 30 cases were reported last year.
