Twelve minutes later firies were alerted to a Dodge Calibre on fire just three blocks away.

And at 9:06pm a burning BMW was phoned in.

Nola McPherson owns the Dodge, which she had driven home just 40 minutes before the arsonist or arsonists struck.

"(I'm) absolutely disgusted with what had happened and then potentially what damage it could have caused," Ms McPherson said.

She says she smelt smoke and saw flames underneath the bonnet.

"It was a very close call the flames were getting very high and actually managed to reach the top of my place," she said.

Firefighters say the BMW burnt for at least 35 minutes.

Neighbours have said they heard loud popping noises and could smell the burning of the metal, rubber and upholstery – one even said the fumes were so strong she felt ill calling triple zero.

Police put the damage bill at $56,000, and say they are continuing investigations.
