Fun-runners raise $650,000 for charity at Bridge to Brisbane

An estimated 30,000 have taken to the streets of Queensland's capital for the annual Bridge to Brisbane fun run.

Brisbane residents rose before dawn today and made their way to the start line in the Brisbane CBD for the 10km race.

Others preferred to enjoy the 10km race - which runs through the city and over to South Bank - at a more leisurely pace.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is taking part in the race, making her way along the 5km route.

Matthew Carlson won the race at 29 minutes and 51 seconds.

Many participants were racing to raise money for their own hand picked causes. Approximately $650,000 was raised for various charities. 

One team of runners, who called themselves 'Game of Crohn's ', raised $60,000 for research into crohn's disease. 

Signs reading "Run now, beer later" and "Stop reading this sign and keep running" were held up by supportive friends, family and volunteers along the route through the city centre. 

Major Brisbane roads were close to accommodate the run, with traffic baking up in various areas around the city. 

Motorists are advised to avoid the area until after midday.
