Brazen thieves target cars in Sydney commuter carparks

Brazen thieves have targeted commuter carparks in Sydney, with video footage obtained by 9NEWS showing one pair snatching and placing a parked motorcycle into the back of a car, before fleeing.

One video showed a man entering a carpark at Macarthur railway station at 9.42am on a Tuesday morning, prying open a door of a four-wheel-drive, climbing inside the vehicle and driving off. He was never caught.

This year, 14,914 vehicles have been stolen in NSW, with Bankstown and Blacktown notorious hot spots for thieves.

However, police said car theft was significantly down compared to a decade ago.

“[With] regular police patrols, coupled with CCTV – it’s foolish to try to break into cars,” a NSW Police spokesman told 9NEWS.

Detectives also said older cars were targeted – and that some motorists left their cars unlocked, rendering their vehicles an easy target.
