Actress Melissa McCarthy has revealed to People magazine one of the ways she is helping her daughters build their self-esteem.

The American actress said she wants her daughters Vivian, 8, and Georgette, 6, to know how to graciously accept a compliment.

“A biggie for me is take the compliment,” McCarthy said.

“I’m hard on people for that. When you say like, ‘Oh, you look great,’ so many women for the next 20 minutes are like, ‘I got it on sale. It’s actually terrible – if I turn around you’d hate it. I’ve got one shorter leg…’.”

She said that reaction often made her feel like the person had “basically shoved the compliment back in my face”.

“It’s a great lesson, but I had to teach it,” she explained, adding it was one of the many ways she has tried to teach her daughters that it’s “okay to like who you are”.

“You try to let them be exactly who they are and you try to show good examples."
