The on-going street war against drunk and drug drivers

The number of drug-affected road fatalities has overtaken the number of alcohol related deaths in Victoria, according to police.

Authorities have seen a rise in drivers testing positive to drugs and alcohol, as police ramp up their operations over the holiday season.

"The drugged driver being killed has exceeded the drink driver," Victoria Police's Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing, Robert Hill told A Current Affair.

In 2013, 39 drivers in Victoria were killed with illicit drugs in their system compared with 24 drunk drivers.

Victoria police released figures yesterday showing 248 people were killed on the state's roads in 2014, five more than in 2013.

It's the first road toll rise in the state since 2005.

Police will extend their drug testing program over the next 12 months, with over 100,000 drivers to be tested on the road side.

"We're trying to keep impaired drivers off the road to make the roads safer for everyone who uses it," Sargeant Michael Larcart said.
