The inside tips on where to travel in 2018

Travel experts have weighed in on the best places for Aussies to take a trip in the new year - and there are some surprising suggestions.

Data shows that Australians are more likely to pick an international holiday destination, picking trips on cost and convenience.

Flight Centre head of leisure travel Tom Walley said the lure of something new was what drove most people.

"More Aussies are choosing to travel further afield than ever before," he said.

He said any destination reachable by a direct flight, such as Canada, was a booming destination.

And places like Sri Lanka, with flights starting from $850, inform Flight Centre's top picks for 2018.

Flight Centre's full list includes Sri Lanka, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Samoa and Cuba.

Iceland has seen a 300 percent surge in bookings.

"We're seeing more and more Australians choosing Cuba - amazing beaches, incredible culture, a culture that's got a lot of 50s and 60s remnants," Mr Walley said.

Australian Traveller founder Quentin Long said there were a lot more airlines flying out of Australia in recent times, which opened up the options.

His picks for family trips in 2018 include Cambodia, California, Samoa and Canada - all linked to Australia with direct flights.

As for domestic destinations, both recommend the Sunshine Coast, the outback, and Hamilton Island.

"It's going to be a great year for Australians going travelling, there’s so much out there in the world to explore and there's something for everybody," Mr Long said.
