Girl, 16, crashes car 30 metres down embankment before smashing into Melbourne home

A teenage girl driving a car unsupervised has smashed it into a home in Melbourne’s east this morning after losing control of the vehicle.

Emergency services were called to Mountain Highway, The Basin, after the Subaru the 16-year-old was driving veered off the road and into a residence about 9.50am.

After travelling 30 metres down an embankment, the car came to a stop in the bedroom where a husband and wife were sleeping.

The 48-year-old man managed to escaped, while the 48-year-old woman and teenager were trapped in the property for some time. They were then taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“It’s extremely lucky that there wasn’t more serious injuries and no-one was killed,” Sergeant Christine Robinson from Victoria Police told 9News.

There were fears the family pet dog was buried in the rubble, but he later turned up relatively unscathed.

“It’s a massive relief, and I believe the owner had a snake… the snake is also out of the house and is fine,” Leanne Gibson from the SES said.

Neighbour Nathan Hardinge described the teenager as “one silly young girl”.

“(She) really needs to have a good hard look at herself,” Mr Hardinge said.

“She damn well came close to losing her life.”

SES had trouble extracting the crashed car as there was significant debris underneath it; crews also had to wear protective clothing because of high levels of asbestos.

Detectives are now looking into whether the Subaru had been stolen.

Charges are yet to be laid.
