Mother back in court over deaths of eight Cairns children

The woman charged over the deaths of eight children at a Cairns home two years ago is still before the courts for murder.

In one of Queensland's worst tragedies, the four boys and four girls aged between two and 14 years were found dead at their Murray Street home in Manoora on December 19, 2014.

It is alleged they were stabbed to death by Raina Mersane Ina Thaiday, mother of seven of the children and aunt to the eighth.

Ms Thaiday, then aged 37, was charged while being treated in hospital for multiple stab wounds.

Her case remains before the Cairns Magistrates Court but has been adjourned several times pending investigations into her mental health.

The house where the children were found dead was demolished in June last year and the land was handed over to Cairns Regional Council for a memorial to be built.
