Textured breast implants linked to blood cancer

Gold Coast doctors are refusing to sell textured implants after a popular brand was banned from Europe this week.

Biocell breast implants are now illegal overseas after causing blood cancer in patients.

Now, doctors on the Gold Coast are reluctant to continue implanting them.

According to Doctor Terrence Scamp, there's a risk.

"With the highest risk implant, it's about one case in every 2,850 implants," he said.

It's still a risk Dr Scamp isn't willing to take, insisting most surgeons here have and are moving away from textured implants all together.

Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration hasn't outlawed the devices in Australia.

Jeremy Roche from Attwood Marshall Lawyers believes it should be illegal here too.

"It's quite ridiculous for us to make the decision that we are simply going to allow these implants to remain on the market," he said.

Textured implants have a rough bumpy surface.

Doctors say the bumps form a home for bacteria which can lead to lymphoma.
