Scarlett the giraffe joins the herd at Monarto Zoo

Australia’s most famous wildlife warriors Terri and Robert Irwin have made a special visit to Adelaide with a very unique delivery.

A 12-month-old giraffe has joined the Monarto Zoo herd after a 2,000km journey from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Scarlet was born and bred at the Irwins' Australia Zoo and they have facilitated the journey to her new home as part of Monarto’s breeding program.

Terri said: "We're so glad to be down here and everything went smoothly."

The Irwins were warmly welcomed by zoo staff, as Scarlett became accustomed to her new surroundings.

Kept in quarantine for 30 days, she was at first apprehensive about leaving her enclosure but eventually set out to explore the open space.

She galloped toward the herd and the Irwins were elated with her first encounter.

Terri said: "Scarlett walked out like a champion and all the boys said hi and now she’s part of the gang".

Robert equally impressed with how easily she joined the herd.

Robert said: "It’s an exciting time for young Scarlett. It’s a brand new home for her but I think she did really well today."

While it’s a new home for Scarlett, she does have relatives here as her mother was originally born at Monarto but she remains at the Australia Zoo in Queensland.

Scarlett will become a crucial part of the giraffe breeding program, which has produced 40 calves to date.
