Teen Islamic State supporter arrested over 'hate crime' in Sydney

A Sydney teen who famously walked off the set of SBS program Insight last week has been arrested over a religious "hate crime" against a cleaner at a shopping centre.

The 19-year-old man, who goes by the Islamic alias Abu Bakr, is accused of verbally abusing, threatening and intimidating a 43-year-old cleaner at the Bankstown Central shopping centre on August 10, Fairfax Media reports.

Security guards escorted Bakr out of the centre but he allegedly returned to abuse the cleaner again so security called police, who launched an investigation.

Fairfax said the cleaner did not know the teen.

Bakr, an Australian-born part-time labourer who is of Iraqi and Italian descent, was arrested in a Bankstown lane last Friday afternoon and charged with affray and intimidation, Fairfax reports.

Bakr gained notoriety over his appearance on television last week in which he walked off the set of Insights after being quizzed about his support for the terror group Islamic State's gruesome actions in Iraq as well as the fact that his passport had been cancelled.

Bakr had his passport cancelled last December because ASIO said he "holds an extreme ideology and is planning to travel in order to engage in militant extremism".

He will appear at Bankstown Local Court on September 10.
