Teen girl charged with deliberately sparking out-of-control bushfire

A 15-year-old girl has been charged with deliberately sparking an out-of-control fire in Melbourne’s southeast yesterday, which took 300 firefighters to fight.

Fire crews worked into the night to bring the raging blaze at Carrum Downs under control.

About 50 trucks and three helicopters were also dispatched to control the fire after it burned through a number of properties in the area.

Emergency services were called to a small fire at Blue Wren Rise just before 3pm.

The fire spread to a surrounding flora and fauna reserve and prompted the evacuation of approximately 30 residents from Darnley Drive and Augusta Court.

One house was severely damaged on Darnley Drive.

No-one was injured during the incident.

A number of other properties were also threatened by the fire.

Armed with just a garden hose, resident Jimmy Crozier did all he could to protect his home of 30 years.

"I went out to just dampen down the backyard, the fence and the sheds - whatever I could do," Mr Crozier told 9NEWS.

Mr Crozier was forced to watch on as the fire took hold of his roof, leaving him "devastated" as crews worked on the ground and from the air to save his home.

As the fire front spread, thousands of litres of water was dropped onto spot fires that continually broke out in bushland, with embers travelling at dangerous speeds putting other homes at risk.

Fire crews were able to control the blaze by about 9pm despite fears of a cool change brought on by 60km/h winds.

The Carrum Downs teenager has been charged with intentionally causing the bushfire.

She has been bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date.
