A delicate rescue operation to retrieve the boy took almost four hours, and he was then taken by helicopter to Westmead Children’s Hospital.

“It’s been a very arduous task to get him back out,” Inspector Murray Traynor from NSW Ambulance told 9NEWS.

Police said the boy may have slipped and fallen while taking a photograph.
