Teen critical after suspected hit and run

A teenage girl is in a critical condition after a suspected hit and run, south of Sydney.

Police say the 17-year-old was found lying on the roadway in Port Kembla about 1am (AEST) on Sunday.

She was then taken to Wollongong Hospital with head injuries, where she remains in a critical condition.

Police say neighbours described hearing a loud noise shortly before finding the girl on the road.

Officers are now investigating whether she was a victim of a hit and run.
