A teenager has been arrested in Melbourne overnight following a sexual assault in the city's west on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old was found by officers at a train station in Tottenham just after midnight.

Police released an image of the boy yesterday, after a woman walking at Altona was sexually assaulted two days ago.

Police have been told the woman, 31, was walking her dog in Cherry Lake Reserve, Altona, when she was grabbed from behind by a male wearing a baseball cap.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Mick Phyland said the male allegedly held a knife to her throat and forced her into nearby bushes, but fled when disturbed by a passing cyclist.

“Luckily, a passerby who was on a pushbike saw what’s occurred – he’s rung his bell and started yelling and scared him off,” he said.

The woman received a graze to her leg during the attack.
