Taxpayers have funded $648,000 of breast enhancement and gender reassignment surgeries for the Australian Defence Force in the past 30 months, a new report claims.

The ADF has dealt with 13 cases of gender dysphoria and 15 cases of breast enhancement in that time, News Corp has reported.

All defence personnel receive funded medical treatment under their contracts.

The Royal Australian Air Force had the most cases, with six members undergoing gender reassignment treatment and eight receiving breast enhancements.

The army had five gender reassignment cases and four breast enhancements, and the navy had two and three respectively.

A Defence spokesperson was quoted as saying not all people undergoing gender treatment received surgery.

"Defence pays for some but not all aspects of the management of gender dysphoria, including surgery," a Defence statement said.

"Equity with Medicare is the guiding principle for considering health care entitlements at public expense for Defence members.

"These general principles also apply in the management of gender dysphoria."

The total cost of the gender reassignment proceedings in the past 30 months was $395,000, compared to $253,000 for breast enhancements.

One of the ADF's most prominent trans personnel, RAAF Group Captain Cate McGregor, said the army had become one of the most "trans friendly" workplaces in Australia.
