A taxi driver has been stabbed in the back after picking up three women in Melbourne's north.

The women stabbed the male driver after refusing to pay their fare about 2.30am today on Sydney Crescent, in Lalor.

The 35-year-old Thomastown man was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Investigations are ongoing.
