A 23-year-old inmate has died in the minimum security area of a Tasmanian prison, the state's third death in custody in six weeks.

Director of Prisons Brian Edwards said the man's death on Friday night, in the Ron Barwick minimum security section of the Risdon Prison, was the result of a suspected medical condition.

Two other inmates were found dead, one in his Risdon Prison cell and one in the back of a prison van, in June and police believe the two men took their own lives.
