The Australian government has done a lot but could have done more to fight for the lives of convicted drug smugglers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, says independent MP Andrew Wilkie.

With the men just hours from facing a firing squad in Indonesia Mr Wilkie said on Tuesday it might have been helpful for Prime Minister Tony Abbott to go to Indonesia and meet face-to-face with his counterpart.

"They've done a fair bit, yes they probably could have done more, but if we're going to have a go here at politicians let's have a go at the Indonesian government and its policy," he told reporters in Hobart.
