Tasmania told to brace for wild weather

Tasmanians are being warned of wild weather and possible flooding as heavy rain and damaging winds hit the state.

A severe weather warning has been issued for most of the island including Hobart and Launceston, the Bureau of Meteorology said on Thursday.

"We have a complex area of low pressure extending across the state which will bring rainfall over the east, southeast," bureau meteorologist David Matthews said.

Winds between 60-70km/h with peak gusts of more than 100km/h are tipped to hit the state's east and central regions on Thursday afternoon.

Isolated falls of up to 60mm are forecast in the same areas and further south.

Similar amounts of rain are expected on Friday, before conditions ease in the afternoon.

SES crews are on stand-by, with a flood watch warning in place for the eastern half of the island.

"Flooding in streams and rivers is likely during the next few days," SES assistant director Leon Smith said.

"Some low lying properties may become isolated by flood waters.

"People should prepare themselves by moving livestock and equipment to higher ground if possible."

Social media footage has shown snow on some of Tasmania's central peaks and Mount Wellington above Hobart.
