Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has championed his government's smart cities project in Launceston, which will undergo a rejuvenation worth some $18 million as part of the joint venture.

The federal government will contribute $7.5 million as part of an election campaign promise, in addition to a $150 million commitment to help create a new home for the University of Tasmania's northern campus.

"It's to bring together the federal government, the state government, the city government... to work together really for the first time," Mr Turnbull said of the joint venture.
