Trek fee sparks Greens outrage

A $500 per person fee to walk the Tasman Peninsula Three Capes track represents the commercialisation of national parks, the Tasmanian Greens say.

The state government's changes will turn the national park into a playground for only those who can afford it, Greens leader Cassy O'Connor told in parliament on Tuesday.

She says it's unacceptable, and the trek is now more expensive than visiting the ancient ruins of Peru's Machu Picchu.

But Parks Minister Matthew Groom said the trek fee includes three nights accommodation, entry fees to national parks and the Port Arthur Historic Site, a boat trip and guide book, and since bookings opened on Thursday more than 400 people had signed up.
