A driver has been left "distraught" after fatally running over a woman who was walking along an unlit road in rural Tasmania.

The 27-year-old died after being hit by a car on Monday night at Longford south of Launceston.

Inspector Scott Flude said the female driver of the car immediately called triple-zero but the pedestrian died at the scene.

"She is very distraught and we are working with her at the minute in providing her with support," he said.

Police say the woman was walking along a part of the road without lighting and wearing dark clothes.

"We don't know why the female was out on that part of the road," Insp Flude said, adding anyone with information should come forward.
