Tasmanian teachers accept pay offer

Tasmania's public school teachers have accepted a short-term pay deal from the state government after prolonged negotiations and stop-work action.

The Australian Education Union on Wednesday said members, also including principals and school psychologists, had voted for a one-year pay rise of 2.35 per cent with 2.1 per cent backdated to March.

But the two parties will head straight back to the negotiating table to work on a longer deal.

"AEU members look forward to an opportunity to talk about a longer-term agreement that addresses excessive workloads," the union's state president Helen Richardson said in a statement.

"The number one priority for teachers is workload - it's all about our students who need their teachers to have time for individual learning and planning."

The state Liberals tabled the short-term offer to the majority of public sector unions in July after discussions lasting more than a year.

Premier Will Hodgman set an end-of-November deadline to reach a longer deal.

The AEU wants to come to an agreement before then to improve teacher pay and working conditions they say remain the worst in the country.

The Community and Public Sector Union and Health and Community Services Union are still mulling the short-term offer.

Public sector staff have held rallies across the state over the past year in their fight for better wages.
