Tasmanian cats to be controlled under plan

The Tasmanian government is cracking down on cats with a range of new permits and penalties proposed to prevent pesky pussies.

Primary Industries Minister Jeremy Rockliff on Thursday released a draft plan on how to best manage domestic, stray and feral cats, including limiting the number of animals kept at a property without a permit, compulsory desexing and micro-shipping, and support for farmers trying to control pest cats.

"The management of cats is a complex issue that requires a range of approaches and the cooperation of the community and all levels of government to succeed," Mr Rockliff said, adding that without control the population will continue to have an impact on native wildlife, livestock and human health.
