Tasmania still waiting on Cadbury funds

Tasmania's Premier Will Hodgman continues to lean on the federal government for millions of dollars in promised tourism funding, originally directed at Hobart's Cadbury chocolate factory.

Mr Hodgman on Tuesday said he was in regular contact with federal Tourism Minister Andrew Robb about the issue and expects the promised $16 million will be handed over "as soon as possible".

"I stand ready to provide a very long list of (investment) opportunities for the federal government, we've secured the funding source (and) we want to see that money dispersed at the earliest opportunity," Mr Hodgman said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the funding, as part of a co-investment, during the 2013 election campaign.

It was to help modify and update the factory so Cadbury could again offer visitor tours of the facility.

But in March the confectionary company backed out of the deal, saying it was unable to come up with its $50 million share.

May's federal budget showed the $16 million as unspent and returned to the coffers, but Canberra has since committed to the money being channelled to Tasmania.

Asked why the payout is taking so long, Mr Hodgman said: "You'll have to ask that of the federal government".

A spokesman for Mr Robb confirmed on Tuesday the federal government will redirect the $16 million to other Tasmanian projects and that proper processes are being followed before payment is made.

"It's only three months since Cadbury withdrew its funding application and we are not going to make hasty decisions that result in bad outcomes," he said.
