Tas unemployment trend improving: govt

Less than a year after Tasmania held the unenviable title of Australia's worst unemployment rate, the state government is citing an improving trend.

Jobs data released on Thursday showed the island state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 6.5 per cent for October, up from six per cent in September.

But in trend terms the rate fell by 0.1 per cent to 6.2 per cent, over the same period.

"Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that our commitment to job creation is having a positive impact," Tasmanian treasurer Peter Gutwein said.

Full time jobs are up by 600 for the month and overall employment has increased by 200 jobs, he added.

In November 2014 Tasmania's unemployment trend stood at 6.9 per cent which was the nation's worst result.

The latest data puts the apple isle ahead of Queensland and Western Australia.
