Tas road death toll disappointing: govt

The number of motorcyclists killed or hurt in Tasmania in 2015 is of particular concern to authorities.

There were 36 fatalities on Tasmanian roads in 2015, the same number as 2014, while serious injuries on the road went up by 28.

Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said the figures were disappointing.

Motorcyclist deaths contributed to 33 per cent of fatalities and serious injuries, despite making up just four per cent of road users in the state.

"Along with cyclists and pedestrians, motorcyclists are considered vulnerable road users because, as this figure demonstrates, they lack the protection of a motor vehicle and are more likely to be seriously injured or worse in a crash," Mr Hidding said.

The government will develop a 10 year safety strategy in 2016, which will include a review of all penalties.
