Remains found in remote bushland south of Hobart have been identified as those of a Swiss tourist missing for more than six years.

Two hikers in July stumbled across the skeleton off marked tracks near the popular Tahune Airwalk in the Huon Valley.

Police on Tuesday confirmed the remains belong to Thomas Munger, 44, who left Switzerland in 2010.

His cause of death is unknown, but investigators believe Mr Munger was out bushwalking and wasn't prepared for an overnight journey.

A backpack with food, clothes, an SD card and foreign currency was near his remains.

Police had earlier released a photo from the card of Mr Munger on holiday in the USA, prompting a phone call from a Swiss man who said he was his friend.

"Our condolences are with Mr Munger's family and friends," detective senior sergeant Jim Semmes said.

Police would like to speak to anyone who had contact with Mr Munger in late 2010 or early 2011.

An international investigation is ongoing.
