Tasmania's Liberal premier has welcomed the outcome of deliberations in Canberra over the federal party's leadership.
After a party room vote on Monday rejected a spill for the Liberal leadership, confirming Tony Abbott's position as prime minister, the island state's premier Will Hodgman issued a brief statement.
"Now that this matter has been resolved it will allow the federal government to get back to the important business of governing," the statement read.

"I look forward to continuing to work co-operatively with Prime Minister Abbott and his team to deliver positive outcomes for the Tasmanian people."
The Liberal government came to power in Tasmania in March 2014 after 16 years in opposition.
