Closed office stops card delivery

Workers hoping to deliver more than 2000 Christmas cards to a Tasmanian MP calling on the prime minister to protect weekend penalty pay rates have been unable to drop off their mail as the MP's office was closed for the weekend.

Nurses, carers, disability support and aged-care workers as well as those in the retail and hospitality sector went to the office of Bass MP Andrew Nikolic on Saturday to deliver the cards with the message "Merry Christmas? Mr Turnbull, Don't be a Scrooge. Protect Penalty Rates."

It was shut and the letters couldn't be delivered, but the group is planning to return to the office during the week, Unions Tasmania spokesman Adam Clarke told AAP.

Mr Nikolic previously said he supported a reduction in workers' weekend pay.

The productivity commission will release its full report into the workplace relations system next week.

The draft report recommended cutting Sunday penalty rates.
