Tas luxury tourism plan faces legal action

An environmental group is challenging the federal government's decision to approve a luxury tourism development at a remote World Heritage area in Tasmania.

The Wilderness Society on Wednesday announced it was launching Federal Court action over the recent decision allowing helicopter flights and huts on Lake Malbena at the Walls of Jerusalem National Park.

"At the time this proposal was waved through the federal process we said that it was a deficient decision that ignored impacts on World Heritage values like wilderness," Wilderness Society spokesperson Vica Bayley said.

The project was given the tick despite the National Parks and Wildlife Advisory Council - an independent body tasked with advising state and federal governments - advising against it.

The plan for several huts, a communal building and walkways has been strongly supported by the state Liberal government.

Tasmania's peak tourism body criticised the Wilderness Society's opposition.

"Unfortunately what we're seeing now are the same tried and true tactics as they've applied against forestry, mining and other economic generators they don't like," Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO Luke Martin said.
