Tas Labor to woo more union members

Tasmanian Labor will try to sign up more union members as part of a new recruitment drive.

The move follows federal party leader Bill Shorten's announcement earlier in the year to loosen ties to the union movement by allowing non-union members to join.

A growth strategy released on Monday by Tasmanian leader Bryan Green seeks to boost the state's 1128 financial members through a range of measures, including discounted fees and a call out to "low-hanging fruit" such as previous and union members.

Mr Green said union members in the main share the Labor philosophy of a "fair society".

"So from my perspective union members are an important part of any growth plan," he said.

In April Mr Shorten announced plans to double the party's national membership to 100,000 as part of a shift from a faction-based party to a membership-based one.

In October he championed a membership boost of 10,000.

Mr Green didn't put a figure on how many extra members he wants to attract.

"Obviously the more the merrier from our perspective," he said.

Labor suffered a landslide loss in Tasmania's March election and the new leader said he wanted to focus on young people and formulating contemporary policy.

"We are working with our federal colleagues to think about ways to broaden the party's appeal," Mr Green said.
