Tas govt backs university expansion plans

Expansion plans by the University of Tasmania could mean places for an extra 8000 students at Launceston.

The Tasmanian government is backing the proposed development and on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding with stakeholders including the university, TAFE and local government.

The plans for a new campus in the city would allow for increased numbers of students in disciplines including nursing, business and education.

Premier Will Hodgman hopes the plans will lead an economic revolution for the city.

"It will be a catalyst for much needed revitalisation of Launceston's CBD, with a vibrant student population, investment opportunities and increased economic activity," he said.

The memorandum includes freeing up land at Inveresk, to allow for the campus, and an increase in the number of student places in areas where there is skill shortage, such as aged care, allied health, aquaculture and agriculture.

"This will provide a skilled workforce and address poor educational performance, youth unemployment and social mobility," the university's Vice-Chancellor Peter Rathjen said.
