Tas fire danger days set to soar: report

Tasmania's very high fire danger days are expected to rise by 10 per cent every decade, a new report shows.

The fire season will start at least a month earlier, causing the amount of very high fire danger days to double by the year 2100, the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-operative Research Centre predicts.

New modelling based on global climate models has predicted longer and more intense fire seasons.

The average area of Tasmania subject to a very high fire danger rating during spring is projected to increase by at least 250 per cent.

"The fire danger in Tasmania has steadily increased over the past few decades, particularly during spring, and is projected to increase further with climate change," Climate Futures Program Leader, Professor Nathan Bindoff said in a statement.
