Tas eyes free speech 'reasonableness test'

Tasmania Premier Will Hodgman's proposed addition of a "reasonableness test" to freedom of speech provisions under the state's Anti-Discrimination Act has sparked widespread community reaction.

"People, in my view, should be able to freely express their point of view reasonably and in accordance with their views," he told parliament on Wednesday, in a move later commended by the Catholic Archbishop of Hobart.

But there was opposition from the state's Greens and gay and lesbian rights advocate Rodney Croome said such a change would allow hatred to be stirred up ahead of a proposed federal marriage-equality plebiscite.
