Four days after a Hobart shopkeeper was stabbed to death the Tasmanian government has launched an investigation into the early release of prisoners as a reward for good behaviour.

"The government is extremely concerned that a prisoner who had just been released on remission allegedly committed an abhorrent crime, which is why we have decided that it is appropriate to closely consider the existing law," acting attorney-general Jeremy Rockliff said on Wednesday.

Voula Delios, 68, died on Saturday after what police allege was a bungled robbery at her North Hobart grocery store. A man has been charged with murder.
