Tas bushfire warning downgraded for Leina

An emergency warning has been downgraded to advice level for a bushfire that threatened the northern Tasmanian community of Liena overnight.

The Tasmania Fire Service said the fire had put residents at high risk, with burning embers falling on houses in the town and smoke and ash making it difficult to breathe and see.

Residents were advised to leave their homes and many evacuated as the emergency warning was issued at around 9.15pm on Thursday.

The warning was downgraded to advice at about 22.50pm after winds calmed and embers stopped being blown across the town, a Tasmanian Fire Service spokesman told AAP early on Friday.

The fire has burned through about 200 hectares of bush within the Mersey Forest, south of Devonport.

Meanwhile the alert level for another fire at Lorinna was on Friday morning downgraded from watch and act to advice.
