Tas bushfire bill to top $25 million

The cost of fighting more than 300 bushfires during an "extremely challenging" Tasmanian summer will be at least $25 million, the state government says.

Some blazes in remote parts of the state's wilderness burned for more than a month as below-average rainfall combined with mild temperatures and high winds, making nightmare conditions for fire authorities who had to call for interstate and international assistance.

"There is no fire organisation in the world funded for a fire season like the one experienced this summer," Emergency Management Minister Rene Hidding said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Whilst the accounts are not settled, I can advise that the cost of fighting the fires will likely be at least $25 million dollars."

The state Liberal administration is in talks with Canberra to determine what portion of the bill might be covered by the federal Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
