Melbourne's fatal Bourke Street mall car rampage has prompted a review of Tasmania's bail system.

Alleged offender Dimitrious "Jimmy" Gargasoulas, 26, was on bail at the time of Friday's devastation and on Tuesday the Tasmanian government said it will seek advice on the the island state's system of using bench judges, or trained Justice of the Peace, to hear after hours bail matters.

"It is appropriate to seek advice on its appropriateness and effectiveness after the recent Bourke Street tragedy in Victoria," Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin said of the current system.
