Super trawlers to be banned in Tasmania

Not just super trawlers but trawling in general will be permanently outlawed in Tasmanian waters, with new legislation to be introduced into parliament next month.
Trawling is already banned in Tasmania but concerns in recent years about so called super trawlers have prompted moves to make the regulation more lasting.
"Super trawlers are a threat to Tasmania's fisheries and to our recreational lifestyle and the government is committed to seeing the back of them," Primary Industries and Water Minister Jeremy Rockliff said on Saturday.

The amendments to the Living Marine Resource Management Act 1995 would mean any attempts to reverse the ban would also have to go through parliament.
